TEACHING

(a)  Areas of special interest and accomplishments: teach courses in the entry-level graduate (MPT) and research graduate programs (MSc and PhD)

1.        Physical therapy impact on population health, and addressing these challenges one individual-at-a-time, as well as collectively (the “village” and global levels) with special attention to ethnicity, culture, and health and risk factor reduction

2.        My teaching and clinical practice focus on a model of health (as reflected in the International Classification of Function (WHO 2000) as a basis for physical therapy practice

3.        Oxygen transport has been a special area of expertise and interest ranging from the complexity of the patient who is

critically ill to the complexity of the person in the community with one or more risk factors for lifestyle conditions

13. OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION (Maximum 0ne Page)

My work focuses on five main areas:

·         international capacity building with respect to a new practice paradigm in the 21st century that is consistent with contemporary definitions of physical therapy, the commitment to the WHO  International Classification of Functioning, Health and Disability (adopted by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy and the Canadian Physiotherapy Association as  member country),  and prominent Canadian health white papers, the overall promotion of wellness and health in society and as a template for physical therapy care of every client or patient, and the consideration of the determinants of cultural factors on global health and ill health, specifically lifestyle conditions,

·         consideration of the social and cultural as well as the physical determinants of health to maximize physical therapy and health outcomes in middle-, low-, and high-income countries

·         addressing lifestyle risk factors and impairments in every person irrespective of diagnosis (e.g., older adults with a history of poliomyelitis

·         the development of a model based on oxygen transport to enhance the assessment and management of patients with primary or secondary cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary dysfunction (as a component of the WHO International Classification of Functioning),

·         the development and ongoing revision of teaching materials including two textbooks (one in its 4th edition, 2006; and the Case Study Guide in its 2nd edition, based on oxygen transport to enhance clinical problem solving skills in both undergraduate and graduate students, and practitioners,

·         knowledge translation and the continual alignment of physical therapy clinical practice (evidence-informed practice) with evidence-based practice through our own research and that of others
